This was a great concert for the Ken Lelen Combo. We performed for a friendly audience in a comfortable venue and enjoyed an event that was notable for its smooth logistics.
Concert publicity was timely and successful. Upon arrival we saw from the parking lot of the library a billboard proclaiming “Vintage Music Concert @ Warren Library.” Both the library and I had sent out dozens of press releases and several local papers published articles announcing the concert in advance. Copies of these articles were presented to me upon arrival.
The event attracted 45 people, nearly all of whom had reserved a seat by telephone or by visiting the library’s website. The library's blog entry described the upcoming musical event and invited library patrons and guests to register.
The 80-minute concert went well for us. I displayed and played five vintage acoustic guitars, including a 1933 Martin OM-18 once owned and played by the Carl Sandburg, poet, folksong collector and Pulitzer-prize winning author. I also sang 18 ragtime, jazz and swing tunes for a warm and smiling group that stayed for the entire concert. Kudos to Marcela Dunham, adult programs coordinator for the library, who made everything work so well.
